Mark Brassington - Warehouse Operative and Maintenance Engineer
I have two roles at ICD Europe – I’m a Warehouse Operative and Maintenance Engineer. The split between the two roles very much depends on what’s going on. For example, if there’s a problem with one of the machines that takes up all my time until it’s resolved. So it’s pretty fluid and no two days are ever the same.
The warehouse element of my role is always busy as we constantly have shipments coming in and going out.
I am part of the team which unloads incoming deliveries from the lorries as they arrive. Each item is handled by a fork truck and weighed. The shipment is allocated a unique reference number, to ensure accurate identification and traceability throughout the whole process.
We are also responsible for dispatching shipments of fully processed materials to our customers. For UK and European deliveries the goods are loaded on to lorries, and if the shipment is for a customer overseas we load the material in to shipping containers. They can be going all over the world.
With my maintenance engineer hat on, I’m responsible for carrying out regular inspections on all our machinery and performing regular maintenance to keep them running on top form. I’m on hand to solve any problems that occur, and if I can’t fix it, I bring in other contacts who can. The main objective is to minimise downtime as much as possible. It’s my job to keep everything working!
The job is different every day and I enjoy that diversity. Performing two roles gives me lots of different things to do, so I never get bored and I get a lot of satisfaction from identifying problems and getting something working. But balancing all the different requirements around the company can sometimes be a challenge!
ICD Europe is a great company to work for. We’ve grown so quickly - we’re flying really. But the company really looks after you and they listen. The MD’s door is always open, and that’s not something you get everywhere.
When I’m not at work, I’m mainly running my 14-year-old daughter around to football matches. She plays for the school hockey and football teams as well as Crosspool football team. It tends to take over most weekends, and I do enjoy it, although it’s not so much fun in winter!
