Derek Brothwell - Warehouse Manager
Derek Brothwell has been working at ICD Europe as Warehouse Manager since May 2017. As part of our ‘Day in the Life’ series, we talked to Derek about what his job entails.
‘As Warehouse Manager I’m responsible for the day-to-day management of the team. I ensure everyone has the correct training, make sure new starters are up to speed, coordinate staffing levels, sort out holiday cover etc.’
‘It’s basically my responsibility to make sure everything runs smoothly in the warehouse. I allocate the jobs and prioritise the workload for our team of production operatives. Things can change very quickly, in terms of what jobs our clients require and when they need to be delivered, so I often have to react quickly and think on my feet. The plan has to be very fluid.’
‘Each day, we put our heads together as a team to figure out the most efficient way to get all the jobs out the door at the right time. It can get very busy and it’s usually all hands on deck, but that’s half the fun of the job!’
‘I do enjoy what I do. It wouldn’t be right for everyone – you have to be well-organised and have a good overview of what’s going on. It can be a lot of pressure but I thrive on the challenge.’
‘When I started back in 2017 there were only 3 of us working on the shop floor. The whole company is growing fast and there’s definitely capacity for more. We’re getting busier and busier and installing more machines so it’s only going one way.’
‘I live in Chesterfield and have 9 grandkids, so they keep me busy! The youngest is 2 and a half and I take him football training on a Saturday morning when I’m not working. I’m a real family man, and I like to make sure the whole family sits down together for Sunday lunch every week.’
