2020 in Review

At ICD Europe, we always like to take a step back at this time of year to reflect on the events, achievements, ups and downs of the last 12 months.

It seems like a lifetime ago that we wrote the last piece, which we ended by looking forward to the challenges 2020 would bring. Little did we know what the year would have in store for us all! It’s certainly been a rollercoaster. But in spite of everything, we have had a fair few highlights, and it’s those that we’d like to concentrate on, as this eventful year draws to a close.

Back in February, when lockdown was just something that happened in prison dramas, we attended the Argus Metals Week conference in London, which was a great opportunity to catch up with customers, suppliers and colleagues from across the globe.

Around the same time, we implemented our Modern Slavery Policy, and our team were busy travelling, meeting customers, identifying potential suppliers and developing new client relationships.

Then, the world closed down for a while. We had been looking forward to sponsoring April’s MMTA conference (as Elite Platinum Sponsors) in Charleston, South Carolina. Disappointingly it was postponed, but we are looking forward to sponsoring next year’s event instead, which takes place in June 2021.

Over the course of the year, we were delighted to be nominated for a clutch of awards:

  • Made in Sheffield award

The awards event was due to take place in May, but this has now been delayed to 2021.

  •  Rising Star Company Award (S&P Global Platts Awards)

We didn’t win this one, but we were delighted for our sister company, ICD Alloys & Metals, who took home the Industry Leadership Award: Scrap & Recycling. They were also were announced as North American Scrap Company of the Year in the Fastmarkets 2020 Global Awards for Steel Excellence in September.

  • National SME Awards

We were thrilled to be announced as finalists for three awards (Business Innovation, Business of the Year, High Growth Business of the Year) and we’re very much looking forward to the ceremony in 2021.

October saw the formation of our new company, ICD Applied Technologies, whose focus is on the development of technologies that offer manufacturers the capability to create complex near net shape components for high integrity and demanding applications.

We also joined the European Investment Caster’s Federation (EICF) in November.

Throughout the year, we’ve continued to support local charities, such as Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. We were also delighted to sponsor the Wickersley Youth U9 football team from September this year.

It’s been a difficult year for everyone, but taking everything into account, we’ve had a good year on the whole. This is thanks, in no small part, to our incredible team at ICD Europe, whose hard work and dedication throughout this turbulent year have helped ensure that we’re ready to start 2021 in a really good position.

We would like to wish all our customers, colleagues, suppliers and friends a very happy and healthy Christmas, and look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible in 2021.

Wayne Hawkes, Managing Director.
